I know Boyle has been discussed on tyhis forum before re. his stand-up jokes about kids with Downs Syndrome etc and his offensiveness and the standard response seems to be, well that's what he's like take it or leave it.
However, I unfortunately caught an episode of his C4 show Tramadol Nights yesterday and have to say I reckon it was possible one of the worst and most pointlessly offensive shows I've ever seen. The stand-up stuff about Jade Goody and Jordan's blind son Harvey was appalling and not even funny. Ok Goody, when she was alive and Jordan are fair game considering their relenteless pursuit of publicity, but a blind and severely disabled 8 year old?
The sketches looked like they were written by a 13 year old desperate to shock and get a cheap thrill and were pathetically unfunny. What worries me about Boyle is that I don't think I've ever seen a comedian before whose material and personality drips with such hatred and bile not only for his targets but his audience too. He seems consumed with a self-loathing and people -hating bitterness that he projects onto his audience who just don't see what he is doing.
C4 are the biggest hypocrites of all though for defending him and giving him the series. Boyle is no more than a Scottish Chubby Brown (worse in fact) but he's "trendy and cutting-edge"so that makes it alright. I felt depressd after watching it and almost less of a human being, diminished in some way, which is what I think he wants, to take you down to where he views the world.

I fear for him. :(

As I've said before on these subjects, does he realy meen these things or is it just a job.

Problem is people do like this sort of thing otherwise he wouldn't be on the box.

You seem surprised about C4 showing this sort of stuff, this is the whole point of the station to shock you and go further than the other stations.

I think that humour is humour and you know what these comedians are like so if you don't like it don't watch it.

when he first came on the scene he was funny... now he is just offensive for the sake of it, and just isn't funny... I think he just got over played on mock the week etc...

If you like comedians over the line may I suggest Jim Jefferies...

me and my bro went to see him a couple of weeks ago on his latest tour!!

the egg joke he does is my favourite joke of all time (not really a single joke, as it can be his whole act sometimes)

I really used to like Boyle and think he had a genuinely dark wit but over the last couple of years he does seem to simply be trying to cause offence. I interests me that you are comparing him to Chubby Brown as I was thinking just this morning that he know reminds me of Bernhard Manning.

I have a dark sense of humour and love satire and for me at the moment he just seems lazy and offensive - your choice of hatred and bile to describe his act seems spot on right now. I read his autobiography recently and that a fair bit of the same sort of stuff unnecessarily and randomly interspersed into it. Some of the stuff he describes that he did on Scottish TV sounds a lot like Tramadol nights too, his description in the book didn't exactly sell the shows to me. Although saying that I haven't seen Tramadol nights yet so I will reserve judgment.

I hope he gets it back cause at his best he can be very funny.

I have been a big fan of Jim for 3 or 4 years now - if the egg in question isn't a real egg I know the sketch you mean "If you died now this is how they will tell your mom they found you".

If you pay to go and see him at a venue then i suppose fair enough that's your choice you know what to expect.
But when you put him on terrestrial TV then that's not on his material is in very bad taste and says more about him really and i'm suprised C4 put this out.

I will never watch him again.

I agree with pretty much what's been said here. He's gone from a reasonably talented standup to a lazy hack just trying to be offensive.

frankie is an occasionally funny, sometimes idiotic person.

He is a very complex individual, he is full of bile and anger but a lot is directed at himself as well as others. He is a 'teetotal alcoholic' (his term) and has talked about his drug use an admits to being a somewhat poor father and partner due to his personality.

He is the prime example of the saying 'thin line between genius and crazy'...he is an eccentric mix of both.

HOWEVER - I would say people who have not even heard his type of humour know what his act is about...therefore if your easily offended (as some are) and then chose to watch it (as some do) than your asking for trouble.

Also, it is somewhat hippocritical for some to condem him...there was the woman who came out and spoke about her disgust when he made a gag about downs which her son suffered from...yet this same woman was sitting laughing through theearlier parts of the show and gags about different religions/races/disabilities...so from this womans perspectivbe its ok to make okes and laugh about disabilities as long as its not one a member of her family suffers from...who is the real problem in that example? I would say her for sure...not him.

I've never sen the guy (Boyle), although I have heard and read much about him. He doesn't sound like my kind of comic. All I can say is if what he says on stage is said to cause controversy to keep him in the public eye then judging by the remarks on this forum it works.

I will also add if I saw someone in the street taking the P out of someone with a disability I would definitely react and probably get arrested, it's easy to pick on those that can't defend themselves.

I agree totaly treetop, if you ignore them they will eventually fade into the background, if you keep harping on about it people will be curious and you'll never get them off the box.

I thought he was funny on mock the week, so thought I'd tune in to the new series for the 1st episode of 'stand up' and I thought it was dire, not just the offensive gags, etc.. but the sketches and pretty much most of the gags are poor or just poor taste...

I then thought maybe it's a 'grower' but alas not, I watched about the first 5 minutes of the next episode and that was equally poor......so I wsitched over and haven't watched one since....

It's sad that people need to make offensive jokes about others less fortunate than themselves, and it's even sadder that some people find them amusing.

Got a link for the egg joke

Search for "Mintys Comedian Of The Month May 2007 - Jim Jeffries" on youtube and the video is about 10 mins long.

I'll just say now the language is pretty coarse - so dont watch it if you are easily offended by liberal use of the "c" word.

That hits the nail on the head for me.

I found him funny on mock the week - altho his stand up recycled alot of the Mock the Week jokes which was a bit of a shame.

And now he just seems to think he HAS to be offensive in everything he says - even if it isnt funny.

Jim Jefferies is really good though, I've got one of his stand up DVDs and its hilarious - the right balance of "offensiveness" IMO.

I think his stand up bit on religion/noahs ark etc is absolutely brilliant was one of the funniest things Ive heard for a while - Id reccommend anyone who hasnt seen it to youtube "Jim Jefferies on religion" - well worth a watch!

It's sad that people need to make offensive jokes about others less fortunate than themselves, and it's even sadder that some people find them amusing.

And even sadder that its being going on since the dawn on time, and will continue to the end of time, and sadder still that some people can't understand that it is perfectly possible to seperate the humour from the subject matter.

I can laugh at a joke that contains paedophilic content, but find the act of paedophilia utterly repugnant.

in his new stand up he does a bit about relationships, sex etc... really funny!

I went to see him at the town hall last month expecting it to be a sell out, with ticket prices at £15. however there was onlt about 200-300 people there!! he came out and said "a wdnesday night in Birmingham - what was I thinking"

very good show.
